I watched Donnie Darko, but I don't think I quite understood it maybe I missed something, can you explain it?

Not sure anyone has really guided you in the right direction so far." Shadow Boxer" is on the right track but her explanation has a few mistakes and the film definitely has religious content.

The story follows the book Donnie gets from his teacher "The Philosophy Of Time Travel". Basically there is a corruption in time and a Tangent Universe starts up which is very unstable. Donnie is the chosen one and it’s his job to erase this alternate reality safely before it destroys the whole Universe.

You have to pay close attention to The Philosophy of Time Travel book and pay attention to the elements surrounding him. When you realize it, it’s beautiful.

This guy (donnie) has dreams of this rabbit telling him the world will end. This rabbit ultimately saves his life as it coaxes him out of his room before a plane crashes right through it.
He become infactuated with time travel because of the things the rabbit is saying
The girl he likes dies and something happens that I dont remember but he ends up back at the start of the movie.
Eventually the plane his sister and mother are becomes a "vessel" for time travel, something the rabbit and donnie himself have touched on earlier in the movie.
This plane goes BACK in time and crashes in Donnies Room. He knows this is going to happen so to stop Gretchen, the girl he likes, from dying he ultimately dies instead. It also helps other peoples lives like the truth and love self help guy who actually has a kiddie porn den etccc. so he doesnt go to jail.

there are some people who relate the movie to christianity.
they compare donnie with Jesus Christ and how in the end he sacrifices himself
to save the people he loves.

Not sure it’s the actual meaning but it’s a different view to it and i
thought it was kind of interesting.

You have to watch the movie a few times…There are a lot subliminal messages. Like the Chinese girl…….she speaks with an impediment when using "ch" except for when they read off the cards for the love/fear classroom discussion. At the end only two are smiling….Some know of Donnie’s (Living Receiver)powers some don’t. Basically he moves through time through a portal and eventually has to save the world from destruction. Frank is the "manipulated dead" who is there to help Donnie fulfill his task and appears three different ways in the movie….in the beginning as the rabbit, as his sisters boyfriend, and as someone who has died already.(Donnie’s parents talk about him when they are in the hotel room). As soon as he comes to Donnie they are from then on in the tangent universe….which is why the jet engine falls in his room and there is no evidence of where it came from or where the rest of the plane is. If you watch the director’s cut it might be easier for you to understand as it shows clips of the book "the philosophy of time travel"(The book doesn’t really exist.) These clips pretty much spell the whole movie out for you.
I don’t really think it has anything to do with christianity…When frank comes to him he is from then on in the tangent universe not the primary. So 28 days is how long the tangent universe will hold up..("that..is when the world will end") This movie is about science not religion…..Though you could be right who knows. Donnie says he is agnostic not atheist so he doesn’t believe in "god" but doesn’t deny that there could be a higher power.

Oops:) I didn’t mean to make it seem like the movie was def. not about religion I just meant that I don’t see the comparison between Donnie and Jesus Christ…Or maybe I just don’t want the movie to be about that…hehe because I’m atheist.

I would just like to point out that even the Writer/Director Richard Kelly has went on record to say that even he does not understand it all. He created a rough outline of the story and added cool elements to get people thinking. And while I really don’t like the Director’s Cut of the film for the way it spoon feeds the audience, it definately spells everything out for you. Be sure to check out the commentaries on both versions of the film.

the entire movie never happened…….the only way he could save his girlfriend from being run over was if they never met…..then she wouldn’t have been on that road that night ……..but the book roberta sparrow wrote…told him how to time travel.. I theenlk….yeah it was hyped a bit……….
