Baader Meinhof Complex, The (2008)

IMDB rating: 7.40

Plot: Germany in the 1970s: Murderous bomb attacks, the threat of terrorism and the fear of the enemy inside are rocking the very foundations of the yet fragile German democracy. The radicalised children of the Nazi generation lead by Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhof and Gudrun Ensslin are fighting a violent war against what they perceive as the new face of fascism: American imperialism supported by the German establishment, many of whom have a Nazi past. Their aim is to create a more human society but by employing inhuman means they not only spread terror and bloodshed, they also lose their own humanity. The man who understands them is also their hunter: the head of the German police force Horst Herold. And while he succeeds in his relentless pursuit of the young terrorists, he knows he’s only dealing with the tip of the iceberg.

Credit Card settlement?
Hello,

I have a SBI credit card which i had used. I have also stopped making minimum payments since the last 3 years. The principal outstanding of my card is Rs. 25000 and the total outstanding is 70000. I got a call from the collections department asking me to pay 30000 towards settlement of the account. Now after 2 months i got an e-mail from the person asking me to make a payment of 40000 towards settlement of the account in 4 installments. In my exchange of emails with the officer I had mentioned that i am out of job now due to the recession and am still on the lookout for a job, but I am willing to repay back in installments. I am not sure about how I can get this card settled or how much will be waivered of because of settlement. Please suggest as to how much can be waivered and is it the principal limit I have to take into consideration or the total outstanding?

Thanks & Regards,
Vincentj

In card settlement you should have a good bargain power. If they are asking for 40000/- then it could be settle in around 30000/- and what ever the settlement amount you could pay in installment.

Vincent, with the debt in question being 3 years old, before you agree to ANYTHING please check the Statute of Limitations (SOL) for your state! If the age of your debt (the elapsed time between now and the last time you paid) is greater than or equal to the SOL, a Debt Collector can pursue you BUT the debt is uncollectable! Got to http://www.creditinfocenter.com/rebuild/ statuteLimitations.shtml, find your state, and look up the number in the "Open Ended" column. This number is the SOL and again, if the age of your debt is greater than or equal to this number, you can tell the Debt Collector to (insert expletive) off! (In legal terms, of course!)

Fire Down Below (1997)

IMDB rating: 4.30

Plot: EPA agent Jack Taggart is Stunned to hear from his boss Phil Pratt that his best friend and fellow agent Frank Elkins has been found dead in Kentucky after Frank’s truck plunged into a river. The Kentucky State Police believes that it was an accident, but the EPA believes it was no accident. It all began with an anonymous letter from the small town of Jackson, Kentucky. Frank was sent to Jackson to investigate what the letter described as some kind of pollution that is causing fish to die and causing people to get sick enough to die. Frank sent back water and soil samples that all tested off the charts for toxic substances. After Frank discovered that the Hanner Coal Company, owned by Orin Hanner Sr., is being paid to dump toxic waste into an abandoned coal mine shaft, Frank ended up dead. Jack is assigned to go to Jackson, where his contact will be Reverend Bob Goodall, who runs a church in Jackson. After arriving in Jackson, Jack finds out that he’ll be staying in a room in the church’s basement, and as Jack’s contact, of course Bob knows that Jack will be going undercover as a carpenter. Jack begins by repairing the roof at a house where he meets Henry Carr, his wife, and his kids Edie, Alberta, Christine, and Walter. Walter is sick because of the pollution. That night, Hanner’s son Orin Hanner Jr., also known as Junior, spies on the church along with corrupt Sheriff Lloyd, who is on Hanner’s payroll. On the next day, when Jack goes into downtown Jackson, he meets Betsy Hamill and her twin sister Patsy Hamill. Jack then walks down the street and introduces himself to Cotton Harry. Then Jack takes some water samples. At church on Sunday, Bob introduces Jack to everyone, and tells everyone that Jack is a carpenter. During lunchtime at the church, Jack introduces himself to Sarah Kellogg, a local outcast who is a beekeeper. Sarah has a brother named Earl. Jack goes to Sarah’s house and offers to repair the steps on her front porch. Over time, Jack comes to believe that something is bothering Sarah, and it’s something dark. Jack wants to save her from whatever it is, while trying to bring Hanner and his crew down.

Bridges of Madison County, The
Bridges of Madison County, The (1995)

IMDB rating: 7.00

Plot: The path of Francesca Johnson’s future seems destined when an unexpected fork in the road causes her to question everything she had come to expect from life. While her husband and children are away at the Iowa state fair in the Summer of 1965, Robert Kincaid happens upon the Johnson farm and asks Francesca for directions to Rosamunde Bridge. He explains that he is on assignment from National Geographic magazine to photograph the bridges of Madison County. She agrees to show him to the bridges and thus begins the bittersweet and all-too-brief romance of her life. Through the pain of separation from her secret love and the stark isolation she feels as the details of her life consume her, she writes down the story of this four-day love affair in a 3-volume diary. The diary is found by her children among her possessions and alongside Robert Kincaid’s possessions after Francesca is dead. The message they take from the diaries is one of hope that they will do what is necessary to find happiness in their lives — whatever is necessary. After learning that Robert Kincaid’s cremated remains were scattered off Rosamunde Bridge and that their mother requested a similar disposition for her own ashes, the children must decide whether to honor their mother’s final wishes or bury her alongside their father as the family had planned. Adapted from the novel by Robert Waller, this is the story of love that happens just once in a lifetime — if you’re lucky.

First chapter of my novel, rate please.?
"Don’t be late OK?" His mother said, David said no problem and went to his car, a Subaru Imprezza WRX that had been fully pimped out where his mates Tony, Alex and Kane waited. They were going to drive around and pick up a few chicks along the way and the mother said to her friend Alexa that she sometimes worried about David but Alexa said that he’ll be fine.

"Yo, Davo this is a fully sick ride mofo," Tony said and then Alex said "Yeh man" and Alex and Kane tended to agree with what Alex said cause he was a pretty cool guy and they said yes too. "We gonna be pimpin’ tonight boys," David said, who was originally from Italy but his parents moved to California when he was three years old.
"Hey man, let’s pick up Kellie, she’s up for anything," said one of the boys.
"Totally, man, I hear she’s up for bonin’ tonight," said another.
"Yeh, I heard it’s somethin’ to do with their climax ay."
"What the eff man, that’s wrong," said Alex, making a disgusted like face.
"I know, ay, shit’s dirty man. I don’t wanna wake up with a blood stained tool." smirked Kane disgustedly.
"You guys are idiots," said David, interjecting them, "that stuffhappens after. We’re right as rain boys!" Laughed David.
The boys got excited and beat the roof of the car in the heat of the moment.
"It’s going down like chinatown," said Kane and drummed on David’s headrest.
"Quit that, man," David commanded.

At Kellie’s house, Kellie was standing on her porch in a cocktail dress and all made up to look pretty.

"Hey beautiful," said David, as his car roared faintly.
"Hi!" Waved Kelly.
"You wann ride with us, girl?" Asked Alex. Kane was poking at his grabs which was making him smile like an idiot.
"Where you guys off to?" She asked.
"Wherever. We gonna party all night."
"Might as well," she said.

All the boys looked at Kellie as she approached their car, her breasts jiggling nicely in the warm Summer air.

"Move over Kane," said David.
Kane moved over and Kellie sat on the right.
"You sure you don’t wanna sit in the middle?" Asked Alex, who was sitting on the far left, between him was Kane and Kellie was on the right.
"No thanks, I’m good." And with that David sped down the quiet street, hoping for cop free streets.

wow you are really good Very talented i think you should like publish it online it would be a really good idea keep going. the first chapter means everything!!!!!!!! xoxo
JANE!!E | Feb 10, 2010

Honestly, people don’t talk to each other like that. If they did, they’d be the lamest group of friends.
Other than Kellie, all of your characters have the same personality - which means you haven’t really tried to define your characters.
To me it seems all of your characters talk in the same way.
Also you seem to scramble your describing words. "ROARED faintly" first you put the image of a roaring engine in my mind, then its only doing it quietly. Something like, the engine hummed. Also smirked Kane disgustedly. Kane smirked would’ve done well by itself.
Also the jiggling boobs shit? You stereotype males even tho (i think) you ARE one. If she’s all pretty in a cocktail dress she’s probably got nice hair, her figure is shown off in the dress, or a sweet smell to her. Remember to use all five of your sense, not just your dick and your eyes.
If you want to write a good story with characters that like to party all night in a car that (and I’m assuming they’re all young adults) is probably way outta their price range since they spend all their money on booze by the sounds of it, try and make your characters realistic, give them a personality other than your own and don’t make nor the girls or boys too stereotypical.
If your passionate about story writing, you’ll put your head into the real world, into the heads of your characters all of whom probably have experienced totally different things in their life time and work on your grammar and vocab, you’ll have what it takes.
Hope I didn’t seem too harsh. ;) Its constructive criticism.

bestsellers written by functioning illiterates (twilight, the notebook)?
while i know my statement is a bit harsh, i don’t think anyone who has read either of these novels would believe they are experiencing Pulitzer-level material. but when you have a good idea, it’s proof that the idea alone can overcome writing "filled with thesaurus abuse, and purple prosed filled mess". harlan ellison stated that "if you look at the crap judith krantz writes, you’ll know ants or aphids can do it." and robert waller’s "bridges of madison county" is on my list, too. can anyone come up with any other authors with bestsellers written so poorly, that they shouldn’t have been.
uhm, no, it’s not because i’m jealous of other’s success. if these people have success, more power to them. but as a consumer, when i read the back flap copy of a book to get a general idea of what i’m reading, and decide to purchase it based on the idea of the story, i expect a published author to be able to properly string together subject, predicate, and object. the object of my question is to discover other bestsellers whose authors could use a writing or even english class, or a better copyeditor.

Yeah I’ve heard the same for the Da Vinci code. I haven’t read it, but heard that the idea for the story is good, but the way in which it’s written is awful.

I agree, if you’re going to win an award for good story ideas, then great. But if you can’t write well then you obviously don’t deserve it. When I read a book, I want to read one that’s well written. I’m not going to put myself through bad writing just to see if the idea behind it was any good. It’s not my idea of a good book.

popular fiction is written and enjoyed by ‘the masses’ and not the elite literate ‘few’, so leave it alone because even those who don’t read Homer and Ovid need something else to read

and don’t put it down, the popular fiction of the 17th century is now considered ‘classic’
jamesmom2 | Dec 10, 2009

Mark Twain wrote for mass consumption, too, as did Dickens, and Lew Wallace, and the Brontes, and on and on … All of them were criticized, too, as being tripe for the masses, and not intellectually appealing.

ps I loved "DaVinci Code" but never thought of it as being anything but a novel .. you know … fiction?

I personally hated Eragon by Christopher Paolini. The style was godawful to read. It got a little better as the books progressed, but the first was pretty bad. I read it when I was younger, so I didn’t really noticed until I reread it recently. I realised that I could have written as well as he did.
But you have to account for the fact that he was only, what, 19? So he could have done a lot worse, and, like I said, he improved as the series went on.
Luci | Dec 10, 2009

I think that, regardless of your personal opinions on Twilight, it’s a little bit uppity (and yes, harsh) of you to criticize someone who has written a bestselling novel when (I’m just guessing here) you probably haven’t. That’s the nature of art: it’s just as much about talent as it is about production. Almost 100 years ago an artist named Joseph Stella mounted a toilet in one of his galleries and signed it "R. Mutt." After it was shown in Paris it became one of the 20th century’s greatest and most talked about pieces. My point being, Twilight may be a toilet, but Stephenie Meyer wrote it and you didn’t. If you think you can do better, go right ahead.
captaindestroyo | Dec 10, 2009

I have not read either of the books to which you have referred but I have to ask; from where does your question spring? Do you envy the fame and fortune of those you consider to be lesser writers? Is a presumed lack of appreciation for your own work embittering you? Remember what the unfulfilled need for acceptance did to John Kennedy Toole. An acrimonious point of view will severely limit your choice of subject matter, unless you choose to spend your talent writing about politics. I have not read Judith Krantz either, but if her work is indeed ‘crap’ then it will not endure the test of time. Channel your energies into your work and let the popular authors have their moment in the sun. While I was not overwhelmed by The Bridges of Madison County either at least the author referenced Yeats. I give him snaps for that. Best wishes.

No matter what some other people who have no clue for good writing say, Eragon is an incredible book. The first bit of the first book is fairly boring. But the other books are AMAZING! It’s a giant battle scene the entire time, with action, romance, magic, dwarves, elves, dragons, and much more! Got to love it!

Any of the 30 or so books - which were really just one book with 30 different titles - by John Norman. I know he’s easy to pick on because his ideas were so obnoxious and so obsessively repeated, but it isn’t just his sexism. Celine and Pound were Fascist bastards who wrote beautifully. Norman was a Godawful writer. There’s a reason why his books, which were absolutely everywhere about 25 years ago, have completely disappeared.

And you’re really being too harsh on Twilight. Twilight is neither the masterpiece its fans think it is or the total dreck that some others claim. It’s a pretty good story with some creepy elements that has been ridiculously successful, and the writing is quite decent.

I CANT HELP IT ANYMORE!!! IM CLOSE TO TEARS!?
Im the type of person who grins and bears it. like when my friends at school spread rumors about me, lower my self esteem, hit me,mock me. i just take it with a smile. but when i come home i have two brothers that make me want to rip my hair out! i put up with them too but i just cant stand it my parents always yell at me and no matter what i do i always end up in trouble. but by the end of the night i have some me time but i dont know how to spend it. i usually just fall asleep crying… ha ha lol. but seriously does anyone know any good websites that boast up self esteem make you feel better give yyou a person to talk to? help please!

try yoga to relax and talk to your brothers sometimes they are there for you

i dont know any good websites to boost your self esteem but if you really need boosting just hang out with your friends more often and try not to think about the bad thing that are happening, think about the good things

Shini, I’m sure I’m not the first to tell you, but "friends" don’t spread rumors, lower ones self esteem, hit or mock a person. Sounds like you need to reevaluate what a friend means to you. Being able to grin and bear it is a good trait, but that too can lead to self esteem issues. Maybe it’s time for you to stand up for yourself. I admit, it may not change their behavior, but I can just about guarantee that you’ll see yourself in a more positive light.

If your brothers are younger and your mom is expecting you to see to them after school, ask for an afternoon "off". That way at least one afternoon a week you can to to your own room when you get home, or phone someone in private, or stop by the library on your way home. To me, libraries have the amazing ability to slow me down and de-stress me.

It seems so trite to tell you to read the Bible, but it can be most reasurring. I’m the furthest thing from being a religious person. People who preach to you haven’t got time to listen to you. So I decided I’d read the Bible and learn for myself what it has to offer me. It’s a lot! Some years past I found a Bible that had a sort of index in the back. It had a listing of selected verses for speicific questions or trials. It was sort of like "if you’re feeling helpless read xxxx" I can’t think of th edition but check out the nearest religious book store, I’ll bet they can tell you what it is.

Best of luck to you. I purposely didn’t tell you any websites or chat rooms. The ones I’ve ever seen are so negative that you leave feeling worse than when you got there!
