Is this good for Ryan Reynolds career?
He is taking on the lead role in TWO superhero movies… Green Lantern and X-Men Origins: Deadpool… is this a smart move or could it lock him in to a "type" character?

I definitely don’t think he’ll be typecast. He has taken on many very different roles and I think they will continue to vary. And he’s the kind of actor that’s capable of taking on two roles that could be considered completely the same and yet make them the exact opposite just due to his portrayal of that certain character.

I also think he’s very set on having a serious career as he’s already made a name for himself. He doesn’t seem like he’d want to fall into the category of playing the same role over and over. So overall, I don’t think it will be a bad move for his career. If anything, it could be a great decision if either or both movies turn out well.

I don’t think it will lock him into a certain type. He plays in all sorts of roles so I think he will be okay. But hey…I wouldn’t mind being locked into a "type" if it meant I was being paid millions
Me | Feb 02, 2010

Ryan’s got some versatility in his acting. Give him 1 or 2 more superhero roles in addition to these 2, then you can consider him a type character
Keith | Feb 02, 2010

i dont think he’ll lock into a "type" character. hes always playing really funny roles and his movies are always good so i think he’ll be fine,

Have you seen The Fifth Element?
What did you think?

Probably Millo’s and Tucker’s best roles.

i agree .. lol that movie is great .. .. im not usually one for all sci fi ness .. but i really liked that flick i will always remember Chris tucker for his role in that .. and in dead presidents b4 anything else .. And Milo is gorgeous with orange hair i hafta admit .. But im a sucker for chicks with accents lol .. i wouldnt say it was a brilliant movie but it was a good story .. and it flowed nicely .. i was interested in it once it started . you know etc etc etc ..

it was very original .. thats what i look for in a movie something that hasnt been done 400 million times already

How many times can a ghost attack someone through a mirror .. or a crazy killer with a chainsaw kill everyone but one person .. and then somehow let them go/// How many times can someone have a vision of something horrible about to happen ,
How many times can the guy and the girl not really know they like each other ,, yeh im rambling now ,, lol

Christians: how do you explain the enormous success of Islam?
If Islam is not from God, how do you explain its phenomenal rise to prominence, and Muhammad’s success as a historical figure?

And does it disturb you that Islam is set to be the majority belief system on planet earth before too long?

Why would God let this happen?

Atheists, same question to you. How do you explain it? Shouldn’t religions like this be dying out over time, not the opposite as seems to be the case?

The options as I see them:
1. Muslims: God really did speak to Muhammad and Islam is the Truth. And the incredible rise of Islam is testament to God’s awesomeness and the reality of His message.
2 .Christians/Jews: Islam is not from God but from some other source, such as Satan etc, and God is allowing it as a test to the Faithful. Or Muhammad is the Anti-Christ, a liar etc.
3. Atheists: There is nothing supernatural going on. People are, sadly, becoming more ignorant. Islam’s rise is not difficult to explain: it is simply a very powerful and aggressive meme and has overtaken other religious memes. It was also helped along by conquests, and currently is growing due to high birth rates and not mass conversion. Muhammad was a smart man with good leadership potential, who borrowed most of his ideas from Arabian Jews and Christian sects, and his revelations were brought on by an epileptic seizure or something similar. By a few smart moves he ensured loyalty and the growth of the religion (banning depictions of him, getting his followers to swear allegiance to him 5 times a day, forbidding apostasy, stressing the cultural and linguistic supremacy of Mecca and the Arabic language, "un-translateability" of the Qur’an etc).
4. Other religions: Muhammad was an enlightened teacher who taught a lot of good ideas, relevant to the people of the time, and ultimately all paths lead to the same Truth.

Thanks for answering.
N.B. I am referring to the success of the religion in history. This is nothing to do with how "successful" Islamic societies/economies are which is a fruitless argument (e.g. compare Muslim Malaysia and Indonesia with Christian Romania and former Soviet countries).

I am only interested from a *philosophical/theological* perspective, how do people come to terms with the historical growth of Islam and the fact that it is such a powerful movement in the world (out of thousands of religions that are now forgotten).
Also, I am not a Muslim, but thanks for the racist comments anyway! ;P

.the quran commands you guy to spread Islam by the way of the sword and that exactly what you guys did and are still doing.

do you know there are a lot of christians in the middle east who hide their faith?

If it is so perfect why do Muslims murder each other, you know like the shiites murdering the sunnis the sunnis the kurds etc?
If it is so successful why did they not win all the crusades and why wasn’t America built on Islam?
Mohammed was a pedophile and a false prophet with a history of blood shed that exist even still today.Did you know Mohammed’s uncle in law was a catholic who helped him to misintrepret his dreams and visions? This might explain that the only knowledge muslims have of Christianity is the warped roman catholic version of it.
I thank GOD that JESUS CHRIST draws us to salvation and forgiveness with love instead of to conversion by the sword.
Ford_Craney | Jan 03, 2010

Because over the centuries, Muslims forced other nations to convert with the threat of death.

When you have the truth, you don’t have to threaten so that just shows that Mohammad didn’t have the truth or he wouldn’t have felt he had to force people to believe it.

Success? You know the movie Borat wasn’t that much of an exaggeration of how bad things are in the Muslim dominated countries. Most of them are still struggling third world countries, where as the Christian countries have a very strong economy and society.

What success? Christians are the ones that saved the Muslims from that crap hole they live in called Iraq.

Ya’Shua stated in the Book of Matthew that in the last days it would be as it was in the Days of Noah. If you look at the proportions of those that claimed God as their God rather than some pagan or man made religion there were 8 souls aboard that Ark from a population of at the least several hundred thousand so what does that say about the proportion of believers in the last days. The Anti-Christ are all those who deny that Jesus (Ya’shua) is the Messiah….that He is God. We’ll all be finding out sooner or later.

olderman | Jan 03, 2010

The logical fallacy you offer is absurd.

There are MORE Christians in the world, so by YOUR logic, Christianity must be from God.

Plus, this is the classic "Appeal to popularity" logical fallacy.

Further — there is NO evidence that Islam will be the predominant religion in the world any time soon, certainly not in any of OUR lifetimes. Statistics just don’t back you up. If anything, it is more probable that the free exchange of information, as well as the quest for human rights for women, will make more people LEAVE Islam.

Your entire premise is shallow, shows a lack of critical thinking skills on your part and is not based upon any evidence other than your own wishful thinking.

Many are forced into Islam, and never convert to another religion due to fear. Muslims need our prayers, especially the holy rosary. The rosary is God’s preferred means for obtaining conversions. See the following promises.

The rosary is explained here:
http://www.ewtn.com/Devotionals/Prayers/ rosary/how_to.htm

The fifteen promises of Mary to Christians who recite the rosary:
1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary shall receive signal graces.
2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary.
3. The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against Hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies.
4. It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
5. The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall not perish.
6. Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries, shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just, he shall remain in the grace of God and become worthy of eternal life.
7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the Sacraments of the Church.
8. Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plenitude of His graces; at the moment of death, they shall participate in the merits of the saints in Paradise.
9. I shall deliver from Purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary.
10. The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in Heaven.
11. You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the Rosary.
12. All those who propagate the Holy Rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities.
13. I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the Rosary shall have for intercessors the entire Celestial Court during their life and at the hour of death.
14. All who recite the Rosary are my sons, and brothers of my only Son, Jesus Christ.
15. Devotion to my Rosary is a great sign of predestination.

God bless!

Islam is indeed the true religion from God. I think the idea of worshiping One God alone without any intermediaries appeals to people’s sense of true monotheism.
People like jael who write about Qur’an commands spreading Islam by the sword do not know what they are talking about and need to be educated.
In verse 2:256 of the Qur’an; God said "Let there be no compulsion (forcefulness) in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error" Verse 10:99 goes on to say, "If it had been thy Lord’s Will, they would all have believed, all who are on earth! Wilt thou then compel mankind, against their will, to believe?"
Therefore, people should not be forced into believing. though we are supposed to speak about the message of Islam, there is never to be forcefulness.

Am I really weird?
I’m 21, graduating this year from college.

All boyfriends I’ve been dating or men that I used to like say/think that I’m weird.

I really love learning new languages, learning about cultures. (my native langauge is Russian) I also know Enligsh, a bit of German and I started studying Japanese this year.

I enjoy classical music and almost all the genres of music. I can’t live without it.
My current interest is Japanese music and Japanese instrumental.

I also like manga. But to a certain extent. I’m far from being considered an otaku. I just like one non-mainstream author, and that’s it.

I like reading and yoga.

I dislike politics, but I do like discussing human nature and principles, as well as serious issues.

I also started learning the violin since September.

I’ve also been attending art classes.

I dislike clubbing, I do like to have a drink occasionally though.

And actually now, I’ve heard that their are churches that help prisoners that have no visitors and are in hard condition (like, life-long imprisonment, etc). And they help them, like meeting them, exchanging letters, etc. I’d like to help. Not sure if I’ll be able to handle it though. I’m researching this right now. And I do take it very seriously.
I’m already afraid to tell anyone about it, because they’ll only say ‘ah, again you and your weird ideas’.

And everyone who’s heard of my hobbies says I’m weird and they don’t understand me, be it a boy or girl. They say that they can’t imagine what could’ve motivated me to start learning how to play the violin at the age of 21, and that being interested in Japan is beyond their understanding and so on.

Once when I attended a class in college with my violin (had to bring it, because I had a violin lesson right afterwards), everyone looked at me and just smirked.

Men often say they dislike my attitude towards night clubs and even start arguments about it.

I’m a pretty melancholic person, but often when at college, I’m very hyper and always bring optimistic atmosphere.
I do consider myself being pretty, men do turn around when they see me passing by.

But that doesn’t mean I’m confident in myself. In fact, all these opinions (because there are too many of them) made me feel unconfident and am I really weird for doing and liking all those things?
It’s more like, people around me are very concerned with their careers and they do nothing except working 24/7.

I personally think that those who only work and have no interests besides their works are… not interesting..? I don’t want to sound rude though.

I think the only weird thing is is the prision thing. I dot think thats safe for a 21 year old to do.
Selena | Feb 09, 2010

Just because your hobbies and interests fall outside of what’s common doesn’t make you weird.
It’s as you’ve said - people don’t understand it, and people have a tendency to reject or ridicule the things they don’t understand.
But that doesn’t make you weird, it just makes them foolish. And a foolish thing is still foolish no matter how many people say it.
Trem | Feb 09, 2010

I’m also considered weird. I read. I play music. I sing. I like reading scientific news. I hardly ever wear ‘conventional’ clothes. I’m nerdy, and also arty. But I quite like people calling me weird. That’s just me, and I’m quite happy with it. It does mean that I don’t always make as many friends as other people though, because I generally like quite different things and can’t always feign the interest in what other people are interested in. But I’m starting to get more into my music now, and I feel like the friends I’ve been looking for will come through that work. (Don’t get me wrong. I do have friends. Just not ones that I can share a lot of my interests with.)

Personally, I think you sound really interesting and like someone I would like to meet! .. You’re only "weird" because you’re not like everybody else. And if you were like everybody else, what would be special about you? (I’m reminded of that song - "If everybody looked the same, we’d get tired of looking at each other.")
monkey_girl | Feb 09, 2010

No, you are a unique and very interesting person and you sound very talented. Just carry on being yourself and just enjoy all your hobbies and interests. Don’t try and be like others just to please them - that will not make you happy. There will be people who will love and appreciate you for who you are - just give life a chance, you are so young. One day you will meet a great guy who is also interesting and who finds you intriguing with all your different talents and interests.

Carry on playing the music of life!
Anita | Feb 09, 2010

Hi,
It was great to see someone like me!
No, you are not weird. You are just VERSATILE! Just like me!
I’m 22 and am an Indian. I know English, Hindi, Punjabi and German (4 languages). Even I love all genres of music particularly, instrumental. I love reading and am passionate about dance - I’ve taken classes in Bharatnatyam, Odissi and Jazz dance. I study Mathematics and Finance but I also love History and Biology. Even I’m not a person to go to pubs… As for the energy, enthusiasm and optimism you talk about .. well, same pinch!
Relax! If you are weird, I’m weirder! And if someone ever tells you that you are weird, just say that you are one in a million … someone who is worth being kept in a museum for others to see and learn. And don’t worry, if you are ever kept in a museum, I’ll always be there to accompany you! ;-) SC | Feb 09, 2010

Well, I never! You’re FINE! Perhaps it may be that I’m filled with my own variety of peculiarities, like impersonating Victorian women for the helluvit at 4AM, of which the general population may deem silly or extreme, but I cannot, for the life of me, call you "weird". All your your interests just sound interesting, and very progressive. Well, the non-clubbing isn’t exactly progressive, nor is it debilitating, so I really can’t imagine the reactions you gain from that one, but! I find your interests to be pretty normal, with intellectual and free-spirited leanings, and I therefore think you have not been socializing with the right people! Best get on that one.
Good Luck! :) Madame Penny Todoit | Feb 09, 2010

Would aliens be considered "people"?
I am curious about this subject in regards to the differentiation between intelligent "human beings" and considerably less intelligent "animals." For example, apes are supposedly within the 3rd or 4th percent of being genetically similar to humans, yet they are considered animals. If somekind of non-humanoid extra-terrestrial race came to this planet, an intelligent one, yet they looked anything but human, how would we regard them? Would we refer to them as being "people" or simply intelligent animal life? How would we go about distinguishing them as either intelligent people to interact with, or simply somekind of highly intelligent animal that allegedly has no way of interacting or thinking on a human level? Is intelligence the only factor that is used to consider when making the distinction between "human" and "animal?" Would we view aliens as "people", like ourselves, or as simply just some strange kind of insignificant life form that is beneath humans?

There is a definition used when considering something as .. human/noid. I can’t remember it all but it’s something like
1. conscious of itself
as the number one definition.
They would be considered people.. just not "Human".. most likely they would be more advance than us and we would be the intellegent animals to them.

melissa | Apr 07, 2006

I consider anyone who can say "please" and "thank you" (no matter what language) to be "people".
haysoos2 | Apr 07, 2006

Most likely we would consider them animals as humans think of themselves as the most important and intelligent creatures in the whole universe. We are big-headed. Many animals are just as intelligent as us or more so in a different way. If the aliens couldn’t communicate with us we wouldn’t consider them people..
kat | Apr 07, 2006

I’m sure the majority of humans would view them as some strange kind of insignificant life form that is beneath humans because most humans think they’re better than basically anything else. Heck, most of them think they’re better than their own god or gods. We are, overall, a very arrogant species.

Vision of what is to come?
V for Vendetta when it came out was a far cry from what most people would even dream possible of becoming reality.

With a nation in a black hole of un-payable and debt and corruption the vision of this film seems to becoming a reality every day… What are your thoughts?

Where do you think America and the world will be in 10, 20, 30 years?

Foreclosures remain on the rise. Layoffs are continuing to occur nationwide. The Feds WILL raise the interest rate shortly. Pelosi and Congress will increase the Fed Withholding UP to 45%. Home values continue to drop. 75% of the Stimilus has NOT been released. FHA, Sallie Mae and Freddie Mac will very soon be asking for BILLIONS of dollars to offset their continuing decline. The Stock Market is a "giant" balloon waiting for the next "crisis" to drop off into it’s lowest numbers in decades. Obama has "disrespected" EVERY major ally we have in the world, EMBRACED the Islamic faith just enough to insure that future terrorists will be granted U.S. RIGHTS to a lengthy trial, with appeals and platform to spew their hatred of America.
Obama signed a "secret" Executive Order granting "rights and immunities" to INTERPOL, who will operate out of the U.S. Obama and Congress have executed the greatest deception and fraud on the country, with their "secret, private" behind closed doors "briberies and deals" to FORCE through a Healthcare that 63% of VOTERS, do NOT want.
And last, but not least…………..Our POTUS declared that the U.S. Constitution is nothing more than a document, "filled with NEGATIVE liberties…………. NEGATIVE !
Thank you Massachusetts, for displaying the kind of spirit of America that we older generation grew up in.

The job loss rate is now LESS THAN 2% of what it was when Bush left office. The stock market has now regained nearly 60% of its value back. Housing has stabilized everywhere and has recovered in a number of places. And gross domestic product and the worth of the average American were both up last quarter (3.5% and 1% respectively) and are only doing better this quarter.

And what is even more amazing, Obama did this while drastically CUTTING the deficit. Upcoming will be proof of that. First up are Republican numbers (which focus on deficits), then the Democrat numbers (which focus on budgets); but both are covered. And no matter which number set you choose, they BOTH find Obama cutting spending by hundreds of billions of dollars. And if you have a problem with this, just remember that the Republican numbers come from Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Sean Hannity. I just did the math for you. If you have a problem with it, tell those three to quit lying so much. If you trust them, then trust their numbers, and by extension trust what those numbers say–Obama CUT spending. Here’s the proof. Enjoy!

REPUBLICAN NUMBERS:

According to Republicans, Bush’s deficit last year was $400 billion, and Obama’s this year was $1.42 trillion. However, what one must remember is that the government’s fiscal year ends on Sept. 30th, and the new one begins Oct. 1st. Well, in mid-September of last year, Bush attempted to get a $700 billion bailout passed. He failed. It was defeated by House Republicans. So Bush added $150 billion in REPUBLICAN PORK to attract those votes. That works, and the Republicans cave and pass the now $850 billion bailout. But they did it in October; AFTER the new fiscal year, Obama’s fiscal year, had already begun. In other words, Bush’s bailout is counting against Obama. So now we must take Bush’s bailout away from Obama, and add it back to Bush.

–All numbers in trillions–

$0.4 (Bush’s initial deficit) + $0.85 (Bush’s bailout) = $1.25 trillion (Bush’s ACTUAL deficit).

$1.42 (Obama’s initial deficit) - $0.85 (Bush’s bailout) = $570 billion (Obama’s actual deficit).

$1.25 (Bush’s deficit) - $0.57 (Obama’s deficit) =

—$680 billion (Obama’s savings from Bush’s spending)—

DEMOCRAT NUMBERS

According to Democrats, Obama’s budget for this past year was $3.4 trillion. For 2008, Bush’s budget was $3.1 trillion. However, this leaves out some info.

First up, deficits. Each President has to deal with the budget deficit/surplus from the year before. Well in 2007, Bush left himself a $500 billion deficit to deal with. Certainly large, but not even half as large as the budget shortfall he left Obama–$1.4 trillion. That is a $900 billion advantage Republicans give to Bush by ignoring previous year’s deficits.

In addition, Bush left out the costs of both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars in all his budgets. The estimated cost of Iraq was $3 trillion; Afghanistan was $1 trillion. But we are only working with one year budgets, so we only need one year totals. Iraq was estimated last year to cost $10 billion a month–$120 billion last year. Afghanistan was $2 billion a month–$24 billion last year. We add the yearly totals to find what needs to be added to Bush for the costs of the wars for 2008–$144 billion.

We add Bush’s bailout back to him for the same reason we had to do so in the Republican numbers–$850 billion.

We subtract Bush’s bailout from Obama for the same reason we had to do so in the Republican numbers. But we must also add the costs of the stimulus ($787 billion) and the omnibus ($410 billion), since they are not included in Obama’s budget.

–all numbers in trillions–

3.1 (Bush’s budget) + $0.9 (Bush’s deficit advantage) + $0.144 (Bush’s war costs) + $0.85 (Bush’s bailout) = $4.994 trillion (Bush’s actual spending for 2008).

3.4 (Obama’s budget) - $0.85 (Bush’s bailout) + $0.787 (stimulus) + $0.41 (omnibus) = $3.747 trillion (Obama’s actual spending for 2009).

$4.994 (Bush’s spending) - $3.747 (Obama’s spending) = $1.247 trillion (Obama’s savings from Bush’s spending).

But while this number does take into account Bush’s deficit, it does not take into account Obama’s ACTUAL deficit of $570 billion (as found in Republican numbers). So we must now take that deficit away from Obama’s savings.

$1.247 (Obama’s savings) - $0.57 (Obama’s deficit) =

—$677 billion (Obama’s ACTUAL savings on Bush’s deficit)—

___________________________

So with Republican numbers, we find Obama saving $680 billion; with Democrats numbers it’s $677 billion. A difference of only $3 billion, which can be accounted for by the fact that our numbers are estimates in the trillions of dollars. Which means that our number estimates were within a 0.001% margin of error.

WITHIN 10 YEARS YOU WILL SEE HYPERINFLATION
WITHIN 20 YEARS HYPERINFLATION WILL BE ABOUT 10,000 PERCENT
BY 30 YEARS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WILL HAVE COLLAPSED

WITH THE SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT WE HAVE THERE IS NO WAY TO STOP THIS
DONALD T | Jan 28, 2010

I spent decades worrying about the huge Federal debt and about the likelihood of another Great Depression. I’ve expected that since I was eleven years old, lol.

And a year or two ago, I was totally convinced it was about to happen.

But it seems as though we dodged the bullet.

Remember, so much of our economic and political system depends on optimism, confidence and trust.

I mean, only ten years ago there was a *surplus* of a trillion dollars in the Federal budget! With a prospering economy, it is possible for the picture to turn around fairly quickly, I mean, within a generation.

I really don’t think it is healthy or helpful to live in dread of a catastrophe that may never come.

I lived in an expectation of doom for too long, and it did not help me. I’m not going there any more.

What I do hope and pray for is a positive future. It will take work and sensible planning and cooperation (rare these days, I realize), but good things *can* and *do* happen all the time.

I liked the inherent satire of this corporation trying to impose the idiocy of human bureaucracy onto this colony of alien creatures, without the faintest idea what they are doing… and the joy of watching this foolish endeavor predictably fail.

I also enjoyed how the main character (the antagonist bureaucrat, in the beginning of the film) was portrayed as intolerably thick and obnoxious, which was of course necessary to make his grisly fate palatable to the audience…

Not many effects-driven films have a character arc as profound as this guy’s. He begins as the antagonist and ends as the victim.

I think there was a lot of room for interpretation in this film, and a lot of parallels could be drawn to different things. For example, the increasing privatization of unpleasant and unorthodox paramilitary tasks (does the corporation running District 9 remind you of KBR?)

I think it also contains commentary on the dehumanization of people in the midst of wars and occupations, which makes them easier to oppress and murder. Imagine if an IDF soldier were forced to become a Gazan civilian. Do you think his perspective might change a bit?

Great film.

Abby, Politically speaking I think your right..
If there was just a couple of aliens they would probably wind up on the Autopsy table at Roswell, but because there was so many of them they couldn’t hide it..
And as we all know the Yanks try to keep everything hidden Eric..

The movie is a South African commentary that looked at its recent past of apartheid and said if we don’t watch out apartheid/discrimination can show its ugly head again in a different way.
Jeff | Feb 02, 2010

I thought it was more of a statement on how people with the best of intentions can end up doing horrible things in difficult situations. By setting it in South Africa it was clearly a parallel to apartheid. you take all the hopes and fears of first contact with a new civilization, and it quickly devolves into dealing with a helpless and dependent refugee population. You want to help, but how much burden can you place on your own people? How much restriction can you put on the refugees? It was a very interesting social analysis. And probably a fairly accurate one.
